Thirty years ago, the Fourth Great Shinobi War ended with the defeat of the Moon's Eye Plan. The rampant Tailed Beasts were once again sealed into the Demonic Statue, where they were safely stowed. Kept safe once again, the world entered into a time of peace and prosperity. Ten years after the war, Tsunade of the Leaf retired from the position of Hokage, declaring Naruto as her successor. The Orange Flash was a fair Hokage and he was honored to have been chosen. After ten years of the job he wanted more though and so he left on an early retirement. He now travels around helping people and villages with any problems (and occasionally, releases a new Ichi Ichi novel). Shikamaru was appointed Hokage in his stead, and has led village of Konoha faithfully, regardless of how troublesome he finds the job at times.

Recently, the aged Tsuchikage Oonoki passed away. His successor has been acting in secret from the other Kages, and his activities threaten the fragile balance of the Five Great Shinobi Nations. More troubling is the rumored reemergence of the Tailed Beasts by some children who were playing in the caves. They are now roaming the grounds, attempting to destroy villages and reestablish their dominance as the most ferocious beings around. To make matters worse, the ninja of all villages are only beginning to recuperate from the losses of the Fourth Shinobi War. Accustomed to the 30 years of peace, they're ill prepared.
